Conjunctiva is the mucous membrane that covers the external surface of the eyeballs and the inner surface of the eyelids. Inflammation of the conjunctiva due to viral or bacterial infections results in conjunctivitis or the “pink eye” as it is commonly called. In some cases, conjunctivitis can also be caused due to allergic conditions.
Conjunctivitis makes the eye turn red and causes irritation or itching. The eyes try to provide relief by producing tears which makes the eye watery. Normally, there is also a thick yellowish discharge from the eyes that makes the eyelids sticky.
Conjunctivitis is a contagious diseases. It not only passes from the infected eye to the healthy eye on the same person but gets easily transferred to other healthy people who come into contact with an infected person. Rubbing the eyes worsens the conditions. Frequent wiping and rubbing of the eyes transfers the viral or the bacterial infection into the other eye too and soon both eyes contract conjunctivitis.
Conjunctivitis is not a dangerous disease but does cause a lot of discomfort that does not go away on its own. It should be treated properly using professional medical guidance.
